Transform Your Space with Texture
Is your space feeling bland? Typically, when people think about interior design, they think of furniture and paint colors, but these are not enough to make a room feel “finished.” Adding multiple textures to various locations in a room will add interest rather than everything in the room being one note. You know something is textured because you can feel the multi-sensory experience in your hands or see dimension. The Interior Design Studio prides itself on the ability to give a room movement, even if it is a monochromatic space.
While shiplap is slowly making its way out the door, one of our favorite ways to add texture to a bland room is adding some sort of visual texture to the walls. Wood paneling is often associated with the beauty and richness of older homes; however, we are using this trend in more contemporary houses to add interest. One way to do this is by adding traditional Wainscoting to the lower section of your room. This is great for protecting walls in the dining room and children’s room from damage. Another option we love is sunken coffers, which have a grid pattern that breaks up flat panels. We love to use this in offices and accent walls. You can also use a scaled-back version — board and batten paneling. You use a wide, vertical molding board to create a symmetrical design. We see these used in home exteriors or even nurseries! All of these wall options will add depth and dimension to your space.
Another way to add texture is by choosing various textured fabrics and layering different tactile sensations within one space. The trick is finding pieces that are different, but somehow all work together. Try creating a mood board or reaching out to The Studio for help in creating a cohesive design. We suggest starting with one piece of furniture or one fabric you LOVE and then working around it. Slowly pull together different items that compliment each other, like a soft, bright rug or an organic, wooden coffee table. Rather than purchasing a living room set, try hand selecting various couches and armchairs that are different textures. You can also try swapping out curtains that are cotton and silk in the summer with rich velvet curtains in the winter. The opportunities are endless.
Adding texture to your home is a process. You won’t be able to walk into a cookie-cutter home store and find the perfect pieces for every room in your home. The key is to take time and keep looking until you find textured pieces that appeal to your space and taste. If you don’t have time to spend on this hunt, we would love to provide guidance in this process!
