Interior Design: The Renaissance of Curved Lines & Arches

Dating back to Ancient Roman architecture, arches were used as a technique to emphasize strength and add height to bridges, domestic buildings, and columns. Over time, we have seen this prominent architectural feature make its way back into construction and household decorative elements. You’ve probably seen it everywhere — from mirrors and doorways to fireplaces and headboards, but how can this interior trend be replicated? Incorporating arches and curved lines in your home can vary from simple DIY projects to full renovation.

Following a minimalistic design, modern buildings tend to lean towards plain walls and rectangular doorways; however, arches are making their way back for a modern take on a classic feature. Residential and Commercial architecture is the most common place we are starting to see these ancient features. They are incorporated into entryways, windows, fireplaces, alcoves, and ceilings. First, you need to determine the overall aesthetic of your home or business. The iconic arch shape can fit many styles and vary in material and color. If you aren’t sold on the traditional arch, try opting for something gentler. Elliptical arches are unique in that they have pronounced curvature toward the sides, rather than the top. They are also a great way to connect multiple rooms in your space. If it is within the budget, arches are sure to create a dramatic focal point in your design.

If you are not building or renovating, there are many low-cost ways to tie in this timeless feature. Can’t knock out a wall? No problem! Try painting a simple arched accent wall. Use multiple colors from your pallet and various sizes to place a painted arch behind a sofa or bed. Another trick is to incorporate a large, arched mirror. This will make the room feel grand by giving the illusion of an additional window. Similarly, adding a simple arched cupboard can mimic the look of a doorway. These are softer and feel less bulky in a room than a traditional hutch. Step into your creativity and experiment with different materials, such as wood or metal, to add texture to your selected pieces. Not sure where to start?
